5.6 Finding Jobs Through Newspapers and Newsgroups
Check out online classifieds in BC’s
major newspapers
Smart job seekers know that most jobs are never
advertised through newspapers. They use a variety of sources to find job
leads. However, you should still check the newspaper classified ads just
to make sure you're covering all bases.
Most major newspapers offer their classified ads
(including jobs) online. Newspapers in Canada gives you links to classifieds from papers across Canada.
With WorkingCanada.com,
you can search jobs advertised in the Vancouver Sun/Province, Calgary
Herald, Edmonton Journal, Montreal Gazette, National Post, Ottawa
Citizen, the Windsor Star and more.
Find job postings using
"Usenet" newsgroups
Job-related newsgroups are forums for employers to post
job openings and for job seekers to post their résumés. You can access
newsgroups by having newsreader software (such as Agent) installed on
your computer. Or you can select the newsreader from your web browser.
If you want to explore job postings in newsgroups
devoted to BC, Victoria and Vancouver, click on the "Try this"
activity on the right.
Almost all jobs posted on newsgroups are related to
the high technology and computer industries, with few postings for other
types of positions.
Don't rely on newsgroups
At this point in their evolution, newsgroups aren't
an especially good way to find job postings, except perhaps in the high
tech area. Jobs are posted in a totally random order that is hard to
follow.
In addition, there are often postings for multi-level
sales schemes and other questionable practices. You're better off to
research and target specific employers than to rely on newsgroups to
find job openings.
