5.3 Online Job Banks

Job banks on the Net post many thousands of jobs in Canada every day. To manage your own career you need to know how job banks work and keep up with their evolution. Do remember that, while the Internet does provide many job opportunities, only a small percentage of job openings show up as advertised vacancies.

Learn about the varieties of online job banks

There are lots of different types of job banks in cyberspace and they offer a variety of services to users:

  • The Canadian federal government offers a number of free online employment services, including Job Bank Canada which lists jobs employers post with Service Canada offices across the country.
  • BCJobs is a website dedicated to posting jobs available in British Columbia. You can search by Category, Region and Key Word.
  • Many job banks allow users to post résumés and search ads for free. On Workopolis, you can search by region/industry/title and apply for jobs online, read articles and develop your resumé. This is one of Canada's largest job banks.

Sector Job Banks

Job banks are now being created to post jobs in particular occupational areas. Here are several:
  • Education (Apply to Teach Network)
  • Arts and Culture (Culture Works)
  • Tourism (Tourism Work Web)
  • Aboriginal Communities (CareerPLACE)
  • Volunteer Sector (Volunteer Opportunities Exchange)
  • You can find these and other job banks related to specific career areas in Module 5.5 (Career Specific Job Banks).

    Use Job Search Agents

Some job banks now offer "job search agents." These are programs that provide you with regular e-mail updates on jobs that match your criteria. You fill out an online form with information about the type of job you want. The agent regularly searches the database of jobs and automatically e-mails you job postings that match your profile.

Workopolis offers a Career Alert service which automatically uses your defined search criteria and e-mails you the results. This program will scour Workopolis's database of jobs and notify you of new opportunities. Click on "Register for free" to activate the Career Alert and search the jobs database.
