5.2 Job Postings on Employer Websites

Many corporate, educational, government and large non-profit organizations are advertising available positions on their websites. If a company or organization is recruiting online, you can usually find a link to "Employment Opportunities" or "Human Resources" on the home page. To apply for these online jobs, you need to be familiar with the various ways you can submit your application.

The following list gives you examples of employer websites you can check out. They illustrate the range of online application methods.

Canadian Tire
Canadian Tire offers a search engine on its website for positions in the coporation right across Canada. Click on "Current Opportunities" and you'll be able to check out current postings. From there, you can complete an online application form in which you are asked to submit a text cover letter and a plain text resume.

If you click on "Submit Your Profile," you can specify where you want to work and in what area of the corporation and fill out an online application form. You'll then be e-mailed any new job opportunities that match your profile.

Scotiabank
Scotiabank Careers posts jobs geographically on this page. Check out the three ways to apply: using the online application, e-mailing your resume, or mailing your resume.

IBM Canada
IBM Job Opportunities uses recruiting software that is identical to that of Canadian Tire (Recruit Soft). Click on "Professional Opportunities" to search available jobs.To apply online to posted positions, you must submit a plain text cover letter and plain text resume.

Public Service Commission of Canada
The Public Service Commission of Canada site allows you to search the National Job Bank, Federal Government jobs, and Job Boom (an online job bank). Click on Job Seeker Tools and note that you have access to job banks, an online resume builder, a job alert and online quizzes. You can search the job bank right away, but you must register to use the interactive tools.

Go through the resume builder for tips on how to apply online for Federal Government positions (indicated with a Canadian flag). Use the Federal Government Jobs site for finding ONLY federal government job postings. Note that you have to register to apply online.

Weyerhaeuser Canada
The Weyerhaeuser company posts jobs available at all its international locations, including Canada. Its Career pages offer several ways to apply through its website including an online application form using the Cut and Paste option and an Apply by Mail option. The Resume Tips  page describes how to prepare a resume that’s compatible with Weyerhaeuser’s scanning technology.
